BACKGROUND— Empire is a stencil display typeface that was inspired by a file folder that Doug Thomas found in his grandfather's storage. This letterform was first popularized in the 1920's and celebrates modernism, jazz typography, and Art Deco.
CONCEPT— As we designed Empire, we strived to create geometric letterforms similar to those of Thomas'. Empire highlights the asymmetry of the original letterforms as the crossbars are at a lower-thirds, which emphasizes the space between the stems.
TEAM— Anna Hong, Cameron Lee, Emily Tang, and Zachary Aramaki
SOFTWARE— Adobe Illustrator, Figma, and Glyphs
